I've been thinking a lot about Mexican artist Frida Kahlo lately. It began when a friend suggested I watch the movie Frida with Salma Hayek. That led to my getting a book of Kahlo's artwork out of the library. And since I've been spending a lot of time on Polyvore lately, it only seemed natural that I create a set (collage) on Polyvore inspired by Frida. I call it A Ribbon Wrapped Around a Bomb. If you're not familiar with Kahlo's life, let's just say it was quite tempestuous. She experienced a lot of pain, both physical and emotional. She said about her art, "My painting carries with it the message of pain."

Frida Kahlo is known for her self-portraits. "I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best," Kahlo explained.

You may want to explore your own library or look online to learn more about this fascinating woman whose strength is apparent in both her work and in the accounts of her life.

This is a sweet vintage postcard from more than a century ago. It is much cuter than my photos suggest, but hopefully, you can get the idea.

The postcard is addressed to Miss Nellie Knickerbocker, Lenoxville, Pa. And the postmark bears the date of January 4, 1910.

The message on the back intrigues me. Here's what it says:

Nellie, will you please be so kind and send that telescope (satchel) on the next stage and we will pay the charges.

Attend to it at once as we would like to use. Send it to Papa - to Clifford.

Lovingly, Kate.

So who are Kate and Nellie? Sisters, perhaps? And why is it postmarked Lenoxville if it was being mailed to Lenoxville? (If they lived in the same town, presumably nothing would need to be sent by stage.)

I guess we will never know...

Merry Christmas 2011!

Sometimes the joys of the season are to be found in the smallest things, such as a Christmas card from a special friend, a homemade gift, a surprise in the mailbox, the lights on the tree, a little baby's smile.

Here are just a few of the small joys of Christmas that I've been enjoying.

This is a card from the late 50's or early 60's that shows my family's Maine farmhouse. The Hudsons were friends of my grandmother, and she let them stay in her house for the winter.

The madonna and child was a card my dad created in the 1960's.

It's amazing how that 60's design vibe still seems fresh today.

My good friend Patty sent me these yummy chocolate-dipped berries as a Christmas surprise.

My friend Julie gave me this cute little bird candleholder. I have it going on my mantle tonight.

And here's another shot of the mantle with both cards and the bird, plus a handmade angel that was also a gift. The wooden Merry Christmas is from a previous holiday.

Seaside Saturday: Foggy day at Pemaquid Light, Maine

Earlier this week, I drove up the coast to Thomaston. On the way back, I decided to make the drive out to Pemaquid Point in Bristol, Maine. I hadn't been to Pemaquid Light for a couple of years, and I couldn't be that close without paying it a visit. Although it was a rainy and foggy day, I decided to drive out there, knowing the lighthouse might be socked in with fog. But not so! It was very gray, but luckily the lighthouse was not shrouded in the mists. Below are some of the photos I took. Please click on each one for a better view. And then at the end of the photos is some information about the Pemaquid Peninsula.

I used to work at an ad agency in Manhattan, and the first client assigned to me was G.H. Bass & Co. At the time, they were headquartered in South Portland, Maine, and they had just opened 3 Spirit of Maine retail shops. Lucky for me, I've got Maine in my genes and have never loved any place more than I love Maine so it was easy for me to create concepts and copy for Bass. I'm going to include below an article I wrote for their newsletter on Pemaquid Light and the Pemaquid Peninsula.

Pemaquid Point Light Captures the Spirit of Maine

Imagine a picturesque lighthouse sitting high atop a rocky point, the surf crashing ceaselessly below, a vast expanse of ocean stretching beyond. This breathtaking scene can be found on the coast of Maine at Pemaquid Point, located at the end of Route 130 on the western side of Muscongus Bay.

Pemaquid Point Light, a favorite of photographers and artists, sits 79 feet above the water, perched on a ledge of striated volcanic rock. The exceptionally pretty lighthouse looks most impressive when viewed from the rocks below. Stop by on a summer’s day, and you’ll find adults and children alike climbing the rocks for hours on end, enjoying the views of the spectacular lighthouse and the pounding sea.

Rocky Cliffs Contain Unexpected Beauty

One of the joys of exploring Pemaquid Point is the chance to investigate the multicolored tidal pools found within the crevices of rock. Any visitor who takes a moment for a closer look at a tidal pool will be fascinated by all manner of marine life, from seaweed to tiny snails and sea urchins.

Next to Pemaquid Point Light is the keeper’s house, now converted to the Fishermen’s Museum. Individuals interested in Maine’s maritime history will enjoy viewing the fine photographs, ship models, and other artifacts on Maine lighthouses and the fishing industry on display here. Nearby is the Pemaquid Art Gallery, where local artists exhibit their works from June through mid-September. Picnic tables and the Sea Gull Shop and Restaurant are next door.

Step Back in Time

Another interesting spot on the Pemaquid peninsula is the Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site. The Pemaquid area has a long history, and a visit to this archaeological site gives one the opportunity to step back in time. In the early 1800s, farmers filled in the cellar holes of the 17^th-century settlement that once stood on this spot. Led by a Rutgers professor, excavations were begun in recent years to uncover the village’s remains. Today, the foundations of homes, a custom house, a tavern, and a jail are visible.

An archaeological museum now holds the many artifacts unearthed from Maine’s “lost city,” such as tools, jugs, pottery, and wampum. It is one of the few in-the-field archaeological museums open to the public anywhere. Here, dioramas depict an earlier village, giving visitors an idea of how the original 1620s settlement looked.

Next to the archaeological museum stands Fort William Henry, a replica of a structure built in 1689 to fend off pirates and the French, which contains exhibits on the early explorations of Maine. A nearby burial ground dates back to 1695. Visitors often wander through the cemetery, looking at the headstones that bear messages both amusing and poignant, wondering about the people who populated the peninsula in bygone days. One thing is certain: Pemaquid’s rugged beauty is as evident today as it was 300 years ago.

Fiction Friday: an ultra-short story called Late for Dinner

I'm back with another Fiction Friday post. This is the time and place where I post my short fiction. Today's story falls into the realm of flash fiction, also known as short short stories and sudden fiction. This type of story is typically less than 1,000 words and often much shorter. And if you've ever thought about writing fiction, consider this format. It's not nearly as overwhelming as writing a "regular" short story or, God forbid, a novel. Short fiction is the ideal format for a copwriter like me, since I'm used to writing very concise pieces that need to fit a certain space.

Late for Dinner

It’s time to go, Ned said.

I’m almost ready, Anne replied, straightening her skirt. I just have to grab my purse.

Anne knew that Ned was annoyed. They were due at his boss’s house for dinner in 35 minutes, and the ride to Evanston took at least half an hour. Ned hated tardiness, and the idea of arriving late to Theodore Gregson’s home for this important business dinner was unthinkable.

Oh, here it is, Anne said, spotting her black suede purse on the chair. As she reached for it, she felt a run in her pantyhose creep up the back of her leg.

Damn! she thought. I should have worn pants.

I saw this today on Facebook; maybe you have seen it too. I think it's been making the rounds of blogs and such. I love it! The only thing I disagree with is "Some opportunities only come once." I believe the Universe is constantly sending us great opportunities. The question is, Are you open to receiving them?

This is your LIFE. Do what you love and do it often. If you don’t like something, change it. If you don’t like your job, quit. If you don’t have enough time, stop watching TV. If you are looking for the love of your life, stop; they will be waiting for you when you start doing things you love. Stop over analyzing. All emotions are beautiful. When you eat, appreciate every last bite. Life is simple. Open your mind, arms, and heart to new things and people. We are united in our differences. Ask the next person you see what their passion is and share your inspiring dream with them. Travel often; getting lost will help you find yourself. Some opportunities only come once. Seize them. Life is about the people you meet and the things you create with them. So go out and start creating. Life is short. Live your dream and share your passion.

Fiction Friday: something new from Beth's Take on Life

Hello and welcome to the first-ever Fiction Friday! I've decided to post my short-short stories (AKA flash fiction) here on random Fridays. I got interested in writing short-short stories about 10 years ago, I think. And then listening to Three Minute Fiction on NPR rekindled my passion for this very short format (usually no more than 600 words). We'll kick off Fiction Friday with my story, The Worst Part of the Job!

The Worst Part of the Job
The worst part of the job, Trish felt, and she was deadly serious about this, was the bathroom experience. That’s how she thought of it: “the bathroom experience.” First of all, the toilet didn’t have a lid. I mean, really, there oughta be a law. Trish had heard the NPR report about how germs and bacteria burst up out of the toilet and splatter the unsuspecting pee-er after flushing. In this tiny bathroom, no lid meant all that bacteria was simply sprayed into the air with each and every flush. Disgusting. Truly disgusting.

Then there was the low murmur of voices coming through the wall from the neighboring office. A psychiatrist’s office. Trish usually couldn’t make out what they were saying, although every now and then she would catch a word or two. “Colorful” she heard the psychiatrist say one time. “Bright.” Were they discussing personalities or decorating? Trish would never know.

Who could she complain to about this horrible bathroom, she asked herself? Who would take her concerns seriously? Not her boss. No, indeed. He was too stressed out trying to bring in new clients to pay any attention to her problems. She would just have to tough it out. Try not to think about it. Drink less water. The bathroom experience was emblematic of the job she hated. For now, Trish felt like she had no choice but to suck it up. One day, she’d find a new job – a better job -- with a better bathroom. She’d get far away from lidless toilets and whispered confessions. There would be no more repulsive bathroom experiences. She knew what she wanted, and she knew it was out there somewhere: a better job. The perfect job. With the perfect bathroom.

This is Wordless Wednesday, but I can't stay mute today because -- wait for it -- this marks my 200th blog post! I want to say thanks all of you who read this blog. I appreciate sharing my thoughts and photos with you. Over the last 3 years, blogging has become a fulfilling part of my life.

I'm currently making some plans for the future of my blog. I still want to add more decorating info and inspiration, as I had mentioned awhile back, and I am also considering mixing in a little fiction. (Yes, my fiction! Yikes!) This year, the scariest thing about Halloween has been the weather! We got about 5 or 6 inches of snow yesterday, breaking a record that was set in the 1800s. This morning as I write this post, it's a chilly 27 degrees. The kids are going to have to wear long underwear under their costumes to stay warm while trick or treating tonight.

Take the Foundation of Rock Bottom & Build Your Dream Life

I happened to catch the last 30 minutes of Oprah’s interview with JK Rowling today, and it really made an impression on me. Ms. Rowling has faced many challenges in her life, but to hear her talk about how she went from depressed and broke to becoming the author of one of the best-selling book series in recent memory – not to mention a massive fortune and a marriage with the love of her life – was truly inspiring. She mentioned the commencement speech she gave at Harvard in 2008, and the phrase that stuck with me was this: Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.

Who among us hasn’t felt like we’ve hit rock bottom at one time or another? Perhaps you’ve weathered the demise of a relationship or the death of a parent. Maybe you’ve been challenged by life with an unhappy child or a demanding boss. Possibly your own inner demons have sent your scurrying to find relief in drugs or alcohol. Whatever struggles you’ve endured – or perhaps are enduring even as you read this – isn’t it good to know that others have gone through tough times, possibly even very similar experiences as those you’re living, and come out of them not just well and happy but truly living the life of their dreams?

I don’t know about you, but I don’t find mediocre acceptable. I didn’t come to this planet to live a mediocre life. I want to see my personal dreams of success and happiness become reality. But how to begin?

I think the path to living our dream life starts with hope. And you can have hope today if you want it. You don’t need money, you don’t need education, you don’t even need to have a job or a home to have hope. However, it is helpful to know, or know of, someone who has overcome adversity so you can use them as a role model. Someone like JK Rowling. Or even Oprah herself, who, from all accounts, had a childhood comprised of poverty and abuse. Is there someone in your own life who’s known tough times yet never given up? Use these folks as your role models and, more importantly, as reminders that change – positive, uplifting, dramatic change – is always possible. Always and without exception.

Pick someone to be your role model, and learn all you can about that person. Pin up quotes from him. Cut out pictures of her. Make a vision board depicting your role model and their accomplishments. Remember that this person at one time also hit rock bottom. But they didn’t crash and burn – they bounced. It took guts. It took focus. And it took no small amount of hope. But they did it and they went on to live amazing lives. And if you are determined to make the best of things, you can take your rock bottom – with underpinnings of hope and faith – and build your dream life, too. You’ve got the foundation. The question now is: How high will your dreams take you?

This is a shot I took from the Town Landing in Falmouth, Maine, at the end of July. I imagine it looks similar down there today since we're kicking off October with a gray and rainy day. It's a good day to stay inside and read a good book. But if you're brave and have one of those big yellow slickers, you might still enjoy a walk by the water.

Exploring the East End, Portland, Maine: Part 1 ~ September 25th

Recently my friend Jenifer treated me to a belated birthday present: a visit to the Portland Observatory followed by lunch at a nearby restaurant.

This was my first time visiting the observatory, which is the last remaining signal tower in the U.S. It's located on Munjoy Hill in the East End section of Portland Maine, just a short walk from Jen's house.

Luckily for us, it was a gorgeous day so once we got to the top, we were able to fully appreciate the lovely views of Portland and Casco Bay.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and his talk was an enjoyable way to pick up a little bit of local history.

The tower was designed by Captain Lemeul Moody.

The observatory, rather than having a basement, is anchored by large boulders on the bottom level. The tower is just over 65 feet high. It was built in 1807.

My favorite part of the tower was the graffiti: names and initials that visitors have carved over the years in a particular spot inside the tower.

In Maine today, it is might chilly -- a mere 45 degrees F at 10:00 a.m. I won't be walking on the beach this weekend, but hopefully I'll be back at my favorite spot very soon.

I am happy to tell you that I just won a giveaway that my good friend Silke had over at her blog, Metamorphosis. She gave away one of her lovely paintings, plus some little crocheted flower brooches that's she's recently started making. Seaside Saturday: After the Storm ~ September 3rd

Tuesday I headed up the Coast to see how my favorite oceanside park fared in Hurricane Irene and hoping to see some bigger-than-usual waves. Everything was in good shape at the park. There was a lot of debris on the beach, and a few trees had come down, but it was an absolutely beautiful day and a great time to be at the Maine Coast. Here's a little pictorial tour for Seaside Saturday... please click on each image for a better view.

The waves were really crashing -- I just love that sound. I really want to tape it sometime. It would be the best sound to meditate or fall asleep to.

Everywhere I looked, I saw brilliant shades of blue.

This bright spot caught my eye so I went to investigate. It turned out to be a float that had washed up during the storm.

I was surprised to see such a big pile of debris near the stairs to Mile Beach. I wonder if the parks personnel raked the beach and left it there, or if it collected naturally. I think they must have raked the beach.

One thing I really enjoy about walking the beach is noticing all of the patterns that Mother Nature creates.

This colorful seaweed was begging to be photographed.

I noticed a multitude of footprints in the sand, including this tiny child's print.

People got very creative, building several little structures out of driftwood.

I love this huge piece of driftwood -- it's like an organic sculpture.

Hopefully, Tuesday wasn't the last time this year that I'll be walking through the waves.

I doubt it! In fact, I will likely be able to dabble my toes in the ocean a few more times this season.

Good morning & Happy Thursday! It’s the first day of anew month, and soon it’ll be a new season. As I sat with my morning decaftoday, I spent time thinking about ways I can re-energize this blog. It’s beensomewhat neglected this summer as I’ve been busy with real-world things, likecreating and presenting a workshop, exhibiting at an art show, celebrating mybirthday, visiting family at the lake, and so much more.

Right now, I’m trying to figure out how I can incorporateinto my blog one of my biggest passions: interior decorating/interior design. Thebiggest stumbling block for me is getting and using images of homes, and doingso in a way that is legally and morally responsible. I’m still investigatingthis subject in order to figure out how I can properly borrow or use images.Until I get a better understanding of image use, I’ll probably be using photosof my own home and perhaps friends’ homes as well. Stay tuned for more on this. I’lldesignate a particular day for interior posts and make it a weekly or bi-weeklything.

What a week! First my birthday (excellent), then an earthquake (insignificant and yet auspicious), and then Hurricane Irene (nerve-wracking beforehand but ultimately not a problem for me)! I survived and now will be heading up the Coast to see the hurricane's effect on my favorite coastal spot. This is how it looked on my birthday...

Recently, while cleaning out my garage and going through boxes of paper, I came across this photo of me sitting on my mother's lap while riding in a car when I was just a toddler.

I thought it was appropriate to post for my birthday. I'm thankful to my mom & dad -- without them, I wouldn't be here! I know they're with me in spirit today and everyday. Love you, Mom & Dad!

Today was a deadline I set for myself. Beginning June 6th, I completely changed my eating habits. I cut out caffeine and desserts, and now fill my plate with lean meats, veggies, and fruit. My goal was to lose 10 lbs. by my birthday, and I'm happy to report I've lost 20 lbs.!

I'm scheduling this post early so I can be out celebrating on the 22nd. May your day be filled with joy and the love of family & friends!

My first time selling at Art in the Park ~ August 16th

Saturday I participated in my first outdoor art show. I shared a booth with my friend Rita, a talented artist. (You can learn more about her and see some of her work at her brand-new blog.)

I offered small photo magnets for the first time ever.

I also had framed photos and hanging pieces that a friend of mine soldered between pieces of glass. I just love the soldered pieces! Thanks, Jen!

This shot shows the entire booth.

This is one of my favorite pieces, a photo of Fort Pulaski in Savannah to which Jen added 3 vintage handmade nails.

Above is a picture I took at home, but it's easier to see the piece. This photo is called Doorway to the Past.

We were right near the kids' art tent, which was fun, and under a shady tree, which was a godsend.

The show was held at Millcreek Park in South Portland, Maine. It's really quite a lovely spot.

I wish I had thought to take a picture of my friend, Lori. One of the best parts of the day was her visit. She drove all the way from Massachusetts to visit me and the art show. Thanks, Lori!!

It was a good day, and a bit of an adventure. Will I do it again? The jury's still out. But I do know I'm glad I was part of the 2011 Art in the Park experience. Big thanks to Rita for participating with me!

Like many parts of the country, Maine has been enduring some very high temps the past few days. Yesterday hit 101 in Portland, a record-breaker. And many Maine homes do not have air conditioning. Mine certainly doesn't. Anyway, I hope that wherever you are this weekend, you are able to stay cool and maybe even spend a little time by the sea. Have a wonderful weekend!

Seaside Saturday: Images of the Maine Coast ~ June 11th

Welcome to Seaside Saturday. I've finally got some fresh photos to share. I took them just yesterday when I returned to my old stomping grounds -- the Willard Beach area of South Portland (Maine).

It's such a picturesque place...

I loved seeing the three-masted schooner sailing toward Portland Head Light.

This is one of my favorite times of year in Maine, when all the flowering bushes and trees are blooming.

I didn't capture it very well, but the contrast of these bright red blossoms next to the dark purple leaves was amazing!

This is a view of the shipping channel. The big oil tankers pass through here on their way to Portland, one of the busiest ports on the Eastern seaboard.

That's one of the islands of Casco Bay, called the calendar islands, in the background. Just don't ask me which one, because I'm not quite sure!

You know, I've never been on a sailboat. But when I look at all the boats in the bay, I have to say that sailing certainly looks like an ideal way to experience the Maine Coast!

The Biennial at the Portland Museum of Art ~ May 29th

I finally made it to the 2011 biennial show at the Portland Museum of Art the other night. The show includes 65 works of art from 47 artists with ties to Maine. There were some really interesting pieces in the show, and I thought I'd share a few with you. (Please click on each image for a better view.)

This is one of my favorites, an interactive exhibit called Synergy 17.

The globules are each made from 3 lbs. of wax.

I love the colors of this painting, Early Morning Light.

The exhibit made of chairs in the foreground is from artist Lauren O’Neal. It's called The Earnest Contingent.

This huge cut-paper piece is Natasha Bowdoin's Untitled Alice. One blogger described it as "a visual take on Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass."

Below is a view of For The Trees by Avy Claire of Blue Hill, a series of panels of polyester film upon which the artist used a rapidograph to create a forest of ethereal trees from words.

I was impressed by this huge drawing of a barn. I can't imagine how many hours it took artist Carol Rowan to create it.

As someone who loves mixed media, I got a kick out of the fact that artist John Walker used bingo cards as backgrounds for his oil sketches.

I call this series of photographs Looking Up. These photos were created on two evenings in April 2010 as I walked through the section of Portland, Maine, bordered by India Street, Federal Street, Hancock Street, and Commercial Street.

As I walked through the spring evening, I wanted to take a different perspective when shooting. I began shooting up at what was above and around me. With this exercise, a number of questions arose: How often in our busy lives do we take time to truly notice our surroundings? How often do we look above eye level? What are we missing as we move through the world?

What I found when I looked up were colors, textures, shapes, and architectural details that intrigued me.

Oh, domesticity! ~ May 26th

One of my favorite quotes is from the author Laurie Colwin in her novel, The Lone Pilgrim. I remembered it today when reading Sarah Ban Breathnach's Simple Abundance. She mentioned Colwin as an author who celebrates domestic delights. That reference sent me to the Web to find this quote, which I used to have displayed on my refrigerator.

"Oh, domesticity! The wonder of dinner plates and cream pitchers. You know your friends by their ornaments. You want everything. If Mrs. A. has her mama's old jelly mold, you want one, too, and everything that goes with it -- the family, the tradition, the years of having jelly molded in it. Gray weather pictures & collage charms ~ May 20th

It's been a full week of gray, rainy, foggy weather here in Maine. But luckily, if we look closely, we can always find plenty of beautiful sights to see around us. I took my camera with me a couple of days this week as I did errands in Falmouth and went to my favorite coffee shop in Portland. Come along and see what I found to photograph...

This is a lovely magnolia tree that grows alongside the Falmouth Memorial Library. I took these photos last Saturday when I went to the library for our monthly mixed media group.

I returned to the library Wednesday (can you tell I use the library a lot?) and captured this red bush (species unknown) and some clover, all covered with drops of moisture. It's not so easy to photograph in the rain, but it's not impossible either.

Heading into Portland on Wednesday, I passed the Eastern Cemetery and knew I just had to stop to snap a few shots of this old burial ground in the fog.

I love the moodiness of foggy day photos.

Lots of creative energy shifting going on with me this week, which has been fun! I made my first collage charms, and I'm so excited about making some more of them and possibly incorporating my photographs. Here are my first 2 little charms:

So despite the gloomy weather, I've been making the best of things -- and making some arts & crafts -- so it's been a good week! The sun is supposed to make an appearance this weekend, which will be a nice change. I wish all of my readers a very happy weekend!

If we're lucky, we find someone in our lives to act as a mentor. In my case, from day one I had a mentor who taught me so many, many valuable lessons, all delivered with great love and support. He taught me about uncondional love. He taught me about using my imagination and how much creativity can lead to a joyful life. And he taught me how to follow my own path rather than following the crowd. I'm a lucky, lucky person to be the daughter of Fred Schoch, and today I post this blog in his memory.

Vintage Vignettes: Still Life with Trading Cards ~ May 9th

I realized the other day that Art in the Park is little more than 3 months away. Yikes! I'm exhibiting there, and it's my first art fair. I really need to get my act together.

Right now I'm working on a new series called Vintage Vignettes. Self-explanatory, I guess. I started when it was still winter and it was hard to get outside to shoot.

I like to play photo stylist. I just look around my house for interesting vintage items and see what I can do with them. I love these trading cards -- still so colorful, even though they're about 100 years old.

I'll be posting more of my photos as the weeks go by and I continue to gather images together for the art show. Please let me know if you see any you like. I'd appreciate feedback -- it'll help me narrow down the choices and figure out which photos to exhibit.

The calendar says spring, but in Maine, I’m sorry to say, it still feels just like winter. But spring is coming – I’m sure it will be here soon, in fact – and so my thoughts are drifting to warmer days, more chances to get outdoors, and the fresh start of a new season.

Here are just a few of the things I’m dreaming about today:

Still all excited that I got to see the super moon from the Coast of Maine last Saturday.

Looking forward to many walks on my favorite beach in the very near future.

I'm definitely feeling at a crossroads in my life. I think I need to send myself this note card: Hecate - Goddess of Crossroads -

I’m planning to move soon, and I have not begun searching yet for the exact right apartment, but I dream of a loft done up in industrial décor. Wouldn’t these fit right in?

You know, I love interior decorating, and I’ve been wanting to post about it for a while now. The problem is I don’t know what to use for images. I refuse to steal photos – which is what many bloggers seem to do. I think that I’ll have to gather together all of the vintage things I own that have a bit of an industrial flavor and do my own photo styling. Stay tuned for that! First up is a big spring cleaning and decluttering project at home. Once I whip my current place into shape, I’ll see what I can do about creating a post or two that shows the kind of interior I like.

In search of the super moon ~ March 20th

As you probably know, last night was the first time in 18 years that we experienced what is called a super moon, or perigee moon, which appears bigger and brighter than what we normally see. If you'd like to read more about it, go here.

To witness this spectacular full moon, I decided to head up the Coast to my favorite place, Reid State Park, for an evening visit.

On the way down to the park, I stopped by a swampy area to watch and photograph 3 Canada geese.

I reached the park about 1.25 hours before moonrise so I was able to walk about a bit taking photos while it was still daylight.

There were quite a few people gathered to watch the big, orange orb rise above the sea.

I enjoyed walking the beach and scrambling over the rocks. The sunset skies were lovely.

I eventually decided to take a spot on the rocks just in front of a rocky island. From this spot, I watched the moon begin its ascent into the sky.

After a bit, I dashed over to Mile Beach for a different perspective.

What an experience!

My photos of the moon are not very good. You know, I only work with a point-and-shoot, and sometimes it's just not up to the task at hand. But nevertheless, I'm sharing some photos here. I found out that Reid was staying open late last night through a Maine photographer named Christopher O'Donnell. He'll be posting images soon, and I'm sure they'll be impressive. To see the super moon through Christopher's eyes, visit his website.

This was the first time in my life I was ever in Reid Park after dark. Normally, the park closes at sunset. But they made an exception yesterday so that people like me could enjoy this rare event.

I hope that you were able to catch a glimpse of the super moon! Mother Nature put on a fantastic show to welcome spring. May this be a season of wonderful adventures for all of us.

I can't remember the last time I was in a boat on the ocean. But I sure do like to photograph boats in their moorings.

The great poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine, and spent much time along the Coast of Maine. It's not surprising then to find that he often used imagery of the sea in his poems.

I had a little New Year’s Eve gathering at my house this year, and I did something different for a table decoration: I made a tree of words for 2011. To make it, I gathered branches in my yard and then attached paper leaves. Each leaf hides a word. Now every visitor to my house gets to choose a leaf so they can discover their word for 2011.

My word is ...

I was rather surprised to receive this word, since for quite some time, I have been on a bit of a hiatus from dating. Well, maybe 2011 is the year I will meet someone special. We will just have to wait and see. One of my friends got contemplation. Another one got optimism. I asked them if they were happy with their words, and they said they were. I would have let them choose again if they wanted to, but they declined. Do you have a word for the New Year? If not, I’d be happy to choose one for you from my little tree. Just let me know.

If you read Oprah magazine, you know that at the end of the mag she always writes about one thing she knows for sure. Today, as the year winds down and I take a few moments to reflect, I've put together my own list of what I have come to know.

10 Things I know for sure:

2. I am truly my own best friend.

3. Happiness is an inside job, every single time.

4. The more I care for myself, the more I can care for others.

5. Action isn’t everything; attitude is.

6. There are little things to be enjoyed in every single day.

The Simple Joys of Christmas ~ Dec. 24th

It's Christmas Eve, and just like a little kid, I woke up early today, filled with excitement! For me, it's the little things that all add up to making Christmas a special time...

I love my little Christmas tree with all its special ornaments! The angel that tops my tree this year decorated my friend Maria's tree for many years, and now she watches over mine.

I love the shadows that the tree lights make against the wall -- in the same way I love cloud shadows on the mountains in summer.

I have collected so many special ornaments over the years. My dad was the first to get me started with an ornnament collection when he gave me a group of vintage ornaments back in the late 1970's. This lovely red bird was given to me just last year by Maria.

It's fun to wrap presents. These were sent off to Silke & Daniel in Savannah.

And it's fun to see how others wrap gifts. This is one of my favorites this year. Thanks, Maria! I'm enjoying it without even having opened it yet.

I don't typically decorate with themes the way some folks do. But this year I did end up creating a little pastel tablescape in one corner of my living room. The centerpiece is a pretty blue and white tea cup my friend Barb brought back from Russia. It's holding this wonderful old corsage that Silke gave me a few years ago. In the back is a DREAMS jar that I made as part of my Artist's Way group and a bright magenta tree in a silver pot.

I also made this little grouping on my porch to greet visitors as they come into my house. It started with a little red chair, circa 1920's, that I found at a flea market in Jersey about 15 years ago. It holds 2 little volumes of poetry from the 1880's and a reproduction bottle brush tree.

I like to make small gifts for my friends. This is a wreath I decorated for my dog-loving friend, DeeDee, who owns a biz making all-natural dog food.

I love stationery and I always have fun choosing Christmas cards to send.

Sometimes I like to relax on my couch with my favorite mug filled with hot chocolate and just enjoy the little presents underneath the sparkling Christmas tree. (My Christmas tree lights are doing magical things this year: sometimes they blink, and sometimes they don't.)

I'm blessed to have wonderful friends, several of whom are also fabulous bakers. Every year my friend Patty sends me a box of what I think of as THE COOKIES. Patty and I have known each other since kindergarten -- and believe me when I tell you, that's a loooonnnggg time! With 400 miles or so separating us, we don't get to see each other that often, but she is never far from my thoughts. This year she sent 16 (!) different types of cookies. Here are some of her pretty sugar cookies on a vintage plate that Maria, another close friend, gave me one year for my birthday.

The busy season is upon us ~ Dec. 20th

As I finish up my holiday prep -- decorating my little tree, organizing my home, writing and mailing the Christmas cards -- I want to take a moment here to thank my blog readers for honoring me with their attention to this blog! I'd also like to remind everyone to take pleasure in the busyness of the season. It's a privilege to have loved ones in our lives for whom we can shop, wrap, mail, decorate, cook, and clean. And if it's getting to be just too much, find a quiet corner and take a brief timeout for yourself -- even if it's just 10 minutes with a cup of gingerbread cocoa at Starbucks. Take care of others, but take care of yourself too. And above all, make fun a priority this holiday season!

A Good Time to Remember Loved Ones

This blog has been sadly neglected as I've been busy the last couple of weeks writing copy for this client and this one and getting ready for Christmas. I did manage to buy my Christmas tree last Saturday, but it sits on my porch waiting patiently for me to find time to decorate it.

Yesterday the last of the out-of-state gifts were put in the mail, so that's one less thing to think about. By the end of the day tomorrow, I should be caught up with work. Then I'll take the weekend to clean and decorate my place. I'm looking forward to getting out the old favorite ornaments.

Since today is December 16th, my thoughts turn to two good women: my Grandma, who was born on this day in 1890. And my good friend Barb M., who departed this earth on December 16, 2005. I know they're both watching over me!

As you prepare to celebrate the holidays, please remember to take time to hug your loved ones. For one reason or another, they may not always be right there with you. With Hanukkah, Christmas, and the New Year, it's the perfect time to count your blessings and appreciate those who matter most! Neglect things like writing a blog or cleaning house? Sure -- it's not the end of the world. Neglect showing your love and affection? Never!

My obsession with clocks ~ November 12, 2010

I have a confession: I'm obsessed with clocks! Not the kind you keep on your bedside table -- big, old clocks with character like the one pictured here. It all started two weeks ago when I went to Biddeford (Maine) to take a tour of an old mill building that's been turned into apartments. This clock is right down the street. It was removed several years ago from the top of an old (mill?) building and now sits behind a fence. That's why the photo is a bit cut off on the sides -- because I had to stick my camera through the fence railings to take the picture.

Anyway, I actually took this photo about 3 years ago. But when I saw it again in October, and then toured the mill building, it stirred up an intense passion for industrial decor -- and these huge old clocks! I'm going to get a print of this clock photo and maybe even frame it. In the meantime, I am heading out soon to scout for more big old clocks! And soon I'll be posting more about industrial decor items. I truly am obsessed!

Update: I just found this YouTube video (no sound) that shows the clock being removed from a tower. It evidently did come from one of the many old mill buildings in Biddeford.

The autumn color in Maine is starting to change over to mostly browns and oranges, but at the request of Marsi at The Cottage Cheese, I'm sharing a small gallery of photos I took at my local Audubon Center on October 23rd. Color was still at peak then so there were plenty of brilliant reds and yellows.

Content to sleep, their work well done,
Colors gleaming in the sun.

At other times, they wildly fly
