Seaside Saturday ~ March 1, 2014

Here we are in a new month, and the year is now 1/6 over. Hard to believe! All of us in the Northeast are feeling ready for spring! There is a certain beauty to Maine in winter, however. To give you a glimpse of the Maine Coast in March, I dipped into the photographic archives and pulled these 3 images from March 2011. I was up the Coast at Reid State Park, and for the first time, I was there after dark. The occasion? The super moon! The park stayed open after sunset, and a small group of hearty folks turned out to see the moon rise from the sea. It was a wonderful sight! Unfortunately, I couldn't capture it with my camera, but here are a few shots I did manage before it got dark. Please click on each photo for a better look.

Seaside Saturday

Last Saturday night, after returning from the Maine Coast, I posed one picture. That was sort of a tease, wasn't it? Well, today I'm posting a whole series of images from my afternoon last Saturday at my favorite coastal park. Please click on the images to enlarge them.

Sailboats on the sea.

Sailboats in the distance, tidal pool in foreground.

A gull gets the best view.

Huge ferns thanks to our rainy spring, I think.

Swimmers in the lagoon at twilight.

Why I love this park: Rocks, ocean, pines.
Also beaches (not shown in above photo).

The reason we are The Pine Tree State.

Last swim of the day.

I love this little scene with the worn wooden fence
and the path to the beach.

Another view of the fence and beach grasses.

The glorious water!

Setting sun reflected in the lapping waves.

Strollers on Mile Beach.

The water is so very clear and lovely.

What I call beach debris. I love all of the textures!

Close-up of driftwood log.

More interesting textures.

Another shot of texture: feather on top of seaweed.

This one's all about the sky!

As I was leaving the park, I was treated to one last surprise: 2 deer crossing the road!
It happened so fast, I shot right through the car windshield.

There he goes, following his friend.

The last shot of the day, taken at a little marshy area with pond
just down the road from the park.

I hope you've enjoyed these photos of the Coast of Maine. Better yet, I hope you get to experience them yourself  -- if not today, someday soon!

Seaside Saturday

I'm back with some more Seaside Saturday images. This week, I didn't get out and about with my camera so I've had to dip into the archives to bring you a few Maine Coast pictures to enjoy.

It's foggy here today, much like the shot above, but not warm enough for bathing suits quite yet.

I always enjoy all of the texture that our particular coastline offers, with its vast array of rocks and pieces of driftwood.

I hope that someday soon I'll be making footprints in the sand again. And when I do, you can be sure I'll be sharing more Seaside Saturday images with you.

Enjoy your weekend!

Seaside Saturday: Images of the Maine Coast ~ June 18th

I visited my favorite spot on the Maine Coast this past week, but unfortunately my camera batteries died so I wasn't able to take any pictures. I've dipped back into the archives to share this photo from a summer's day on the same beach.

In search of the super moon ~ March 20th

As you probably know, last night was the first time in 18 years that we experienced what is called a super moon, or perigee moon, which appears bigger and brighter than what we normally see. If you'd like to read more about it, go here.

To witness this spectacular full moon, I decided to head up the Coast to my favorite place, Reid State Park, for an evening visit.

On the way down to the park, I stopped by a swampy area to watch and photograph 3 Canada geese.

I reached the park about 1.25 hours before moonrise so I was able to walk about a bit taking photos while it was still daylight.

There were quite a few people gathered to watch the big, orange orb rise above the sea.

I enjoyed walking the beach and scrambling over the rocks. The sunset skies were lovely.

I eventually decided to take a spot on the rocks just in front of a rocky island. From this spot, I watched the moon begin its ascent into the sky.

After a bit, I dashed over to Mile Beach for a different perspective.

What an experience!

My photos of the moon are not very good. You know, I only work with a point-and-shoot, and sometimes it's just not up to the task at hand. But nevertheless, I'm sharing some photos here. (Please click on each photo for a better view.) You can see many more images online when you search on super moon.

I found out that Reid was staying open late last night through a Maine photographer named Christopher O'Donnell. He'll be posting images soon, and I'm sure they'll be impressive. To see the super moon through Christopher's eyes, visit his website.

This was the first time in my life I was ever in Reid Park after dark. Normally, the park closes at sunset. But they made an exception yesterday so that people like me could enjoy this rare event.

I hope that you were able to catch a glimpse of the super moon! Mother Nature put on a fantastic show to welcome spring. May this be a season of wonderful adventures for all of us.

Seaside Saturday: Images of the Maine Coast ~ March 5th

If only the sky were this blue today! It's rainy, chilly, and quite miserable here today. Hope you enjoy this virtual trip to the Maine Coast on a summer's day.
