Seaside Saturday ~ November 2, 2013

Seaside Saturday is back! No matter what the calendar or the weatherman say, it's always a good day for a walk on the beach...

A little fog only adds to the ambiance. This is Ferry Beach in Saco, Maine. (Click on each image for a better look.)

I took this picture of colorful rowboats several years ago when I was on the way to a party on an island in Casco Bay.

Another foggy day scene, this one at Five Islands in Georgetown, Maine.

More brightly colored boats. This, too, was taken in Five Islands, but on a much sunnier day.

My favorite place in the world, any time, any season: Reid State Park.

We finish up our walk on the beach, leaving footprints but taking our memories with us.

Seaside Saturday

I'm back with some more Seaside Saturday images. This week, I didn't get out and about with my camera so I've had to dip into the archives to bring you a few Maine Coast pictures to enjoy.

It's foggy here today, much like the shot above, but not warm enough for bathing suits quite yet.

I always enjoy all of the texture that our particular coastline offers, with its vast array of rocks and pieces of driftwood.

I hope that someday soon I'll be making footprints in the sand again. And when I do, you can be sure I'll be sharing more Seaside Saturday images with you.

Enjoy your weekend!

Seaside Saturday: Images of the Maine Coast ~ Feb. 26th

Welcome to Saturday, but not just any Saturday -- Seaside Saturday! Here is your chance to take a few relaxing moments for a dream vacation on the Maine Coast. Please click on each photo so you can really "feel" what it's like to be seaside.

Can't you just smell the salty air and hear the waves crashing on the shore?

If this isn't heaven, I don't know what is!

I love looking at the patterns in the sand -- Mother Nature's artwork.

I hope you've enjoyed the latest Seaside Saturday. Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you may be!

Seaside Saturday: Images of the Maine Coast ~ Feb. 5th

I'm back with more seaside images. These are photos I pulled from the archives, but they do give you an idea of what the Maine Coast is like at this time of year. To really see them well, please click on each image to enlarge it.

The great poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine, and spent much time along the Coast of Maine. It's not surprising then to find that he often used imagery of the sea in his poems.

I'll leave you with one of his poems. To read more about Longfellow, go here

The Tides
I saw the long line of the vacant shore,
The sea-weed and the shells upon the sand,
And the brown rocks left bare on every hand,
As if the ebbing tide would flow no more.
Then heard I, more distinctly than before,
The ocean breathe and its great breast expand,
And hurrying came on the defenceless land
The insurgent waters with tumultuous roar.
All thought and feeling and desire, I said,
Love, laughter, and the exultant joy of song
Have ebbed from me forever! Suddenly o'er me
They swept again from their deep ocean bed,
And in a tumult of delight, and strong
As youth, and beautiful as youth, upbore me.

The Beauty of Maine ~ January

[Please click images for a better view]

I always say that Maine is beautiful in any season...

Oh, the summers are certainly sublime. During the months of July and August, I cannot imagine being in a better place than Maine.

But in January, there is still lots to love about the Pine Tree State. You just might have to look a little harder to appreciate winter's beauty.

This past week, I made a point of going to Portland Head Light to see if there was much wave action.

It turned out that the waves were pretty active although the sea was not as rough as I've seen it after other big storms.

Luckily, I arrived in late afternoon, when the sky was putting on a lovely light show. I took about 80 or 90 photos before heading back home.

The sun was setting as I was driving through Portland so I raced to the Town Landing in Falmouth to get a good view of the sunset over Casco Bay.

I made it in time to see a beautiful pink and gray sky...

And so you can see that winter sunsets here are glorious.

And they're just one reason that I say that Maine is beautiful year-round.

Beachin' it!

This has been one rainy summer in New England! But yesterday the sun shone brightly and temps rose into the 80's, making it the perfect day for a trip to the beach. My favorite spot by the sea is Reid State Park, so I headed up there and enjoyed 4 fabulous hours wading through the waves, reading in the sun, and listening to the children splashing and laughing all around me. My photos from yesterday did not turn out very well, so I went into my picture files and found these images so you could share some of the tremendous beauty of this special place. (Click on each photo for a better view.) I've been going to Reid all my life, and it never ceases to delight me! I feel very lucky to be living close to such an ideal place. Hope wherever you are, you're enjoying some relaxing time this season!
