Vintage Vignettes: Still Life with Trading Cards ~ May 9th

I realized the other day that Art in the Park is little more than 3 months away. Yikes! I'm exhibiting there, and it's my first art fair. I really need to get my act together.

Right now I'm working on a new series called Vintage Vignettes. Self-explanatory, I guess. I started when it was still winter and it was hard to get outside to shoot.

I like to play photo stylist. I just look around my house for interesting vintage items and see what I can do with them. I love these trading cards -- still so colorful, even though they're about 100 years old.

I'll be posting more of my photos as the weeks go by and I continue to gather images together for the art show. Please let me know if you see any you like. I'd appreciate feedback -- it'll help me narrow down the choices and figure out which photos to exhibit.

Around & About: Shooting the Familiar

Thanks to Jessica at Jessica Rogers Photography and her weekly photo gallery, I've been inspired to get out on a regular basis to shoot pictures. And I've found there is plenty to photograph right in my own neighborhood. (Click on images to enlarge.)

Sunday I spent some time at the Gilsland Farm Audubon Center, located about 3 miles down the road from my place.

There is a community garden there, and while exploring it I came across this lovely double lily (below). I've submitted this photo to both Jessica's Photo of the Week and Illustration Friday, where this week's theme is Double.

I also discovered some marvelous outdoor sculptures made of metal.

These huge animals make a striking statement with the meadows as a backdrop. A quick online search brought up the details about the massive pieces:

"Wendy Klemperer salvages industrial materials to construct expressive gestural sketches in steel. This exhibition features extirpated wildlife species including life size wolves, elk, caribou, and mountain lions along with native deer, fox and porcupines. Sculpture will be sited along the entry drive, woodland trails, by the pond and apple orchards of Gilsland farm, re-imagining these species on the Maine landscape."

I'm looking forward to seeing what I'll find this week during my quest for the next great photo!

Summer Colours ~ Green Day

I've so been enjoying Summer Colours week on Flickr. Thank you to Poppytalk for creating this great photo group! We've already had pink day and yellow day. Now it's Wednesday, and the emphasis is on the many shades of green, from emerald to lime to mint and every other shade in-between.

For the rest of my green images -- and all of the others in this inspiring gallery -- go right over to Summer Colours and check them all out!

Variations on a theme

Saturday morning, I got up early and happened to notice the way the sun was striking my kitchen table. I had already been thinking about taking photos of my old vintage teapot, and the time suddenly seemed right. I'm very pleased with this image.

And today I decided to play around with it in Photoshop Elements. Please click on each picture for a better look.

Which one is your favorite? The original color one, or one of my experimental variations?

Looking Up (again)

Here are more photos from my Looking Up series that I started last week. All photos were taken in Portland, Maine. I did quite a bit of photo editing so some are color and some are black and white. Please click on each image for a better view. And stop back later in the week -- I'll be shooting more images tomorrow evening!

New photography series: Looking Up

I am working on several new photography series for my Etsy photo shop/gallery, and I thought I would post a preview of one of my series -- this one is called Looking Up. (As always, please click on images for a better view.)

All of these photos were taken in downtown Portland, Maine, last evening.

I walked around for about 45 minutes, traversing maybe three square blocks, and took 200 photos.

I've got lots more to post, but I will save them for another day. Of this group, my favorite is the window. I just love the reflections -- I feel as though I am getting a glimpse into other worlds.

Photo pairs: the experiment continues

(Please click on photos for a bigger view.)
I asked my good friend Silke at Metamorphosis to help me with this posting. I was inspired by Neville at Sainte Verde Digest to try pairing photos -- one of Silke's with one of mine. (Hers are on the left, and mine are on the right.) Pairing photos is harder than it looks! Neville makes it look so easy. He has an amazing eye. I don't know that I have his talent for design, but I had a ball doing this. In fact, it is kind of addictive, so you will probably be seeing lots more photo pairs.

New York: an experiment with photos

I'm doing an experiment here... I'm playing around with pairing up photos after being inspired by Neville at Saint Verde Digest. He has such an amazing eye! I can tell already that I've been too literal, pairing a book about NYC with a photo of Manhattan, but that's OK. I learn by doing! I am going to go ahead and publish this post. Expect to see more of this sort of thing in future. (And hopefully, I'll be able to figure out how to get rid of the big space above the photos.)

New York: The Wonder City, 1939Empire State Building, 2007

For those who are wondering, the booklet above was published by Interborough News Co. for The Merchants' Association of New York. There is a great letter on the inside front cover. Here is an excerpt:

"We like visitors because the presence here of people from other places helps bring about a better mutual understanding. New York is essentially a friendly, home-loving City. Our deep aspirations are your aspirations -- for peace, opportunity and good will."

I can't remember if I picked up this booklet at the 26th St. flea market when I lived in NY, or if it was given to me by my dad (antique dealer extraordinaire). In any case, I really like it and currently have it displayed on a side table in my living room.

Funky Friday revisits the past

Anyone who reads my log on any kind of a regular basis knows that I like to do a post called Funky Friday. This week, I'm posting a picture that looks old but isn't -- although the subject matter is. I found a site online (http://labs.wanokoto.jp/olds) that allowed me to instantly "age" a photo. Here's an example. This picture was taken in Stow, Maine, about a year or so ago. The building is called Brickett House. It is a 19th-century historic brick farmhouse, and it's located right near the Maine-NH border, at the entrance to Evans Notch. I've never been inside, although it is open to visitors during the summer months. I'm heading over to Evans Notch on Saturday, so there will undoubtedly be more photos of that area to follow soon. For now, please enjoy this photo, whose aged appearance certainly qualifies it as funky. Have a fun Friday and a wonderful weekend!

Spring's here & summer's coming!

Today my mind is filled with thoughts of all the lovely things I'm anticipating...

walks on the beach...

wiggling my toes in the sand... finding mermaids...

exploring the beautiful Maine woods...

I find such serenity there...

driving up the Coast to Pemaquid Light...

talk about your photo ops...

Everything about Maine in the summer is simply glorious! I think it's going to be a really fun & inspiring season!
